Educational offer and CFUs structure

The overall commitment is 180 CFUs (University training credits), evenly distributed over the three years of the course (60 CFUs for each year).

First Year
The training activity involves the acquisition of 53 CFUs in the first year of the course obtained by attending specific cycles of lessons offered by the University of Messina dedicated to doctoral students. The remaining training credits (7 CFUs) in the first year must be obtained by attending classes and in-depth seminars in the individual specializations' disciplinary areas (SSD).

Second Year
In the second year, 20 CFUs are obtained by attending in-depth seminars in the disciplinary areas (SSD) of the individual specializations organized by the University of Messina; the remaining number of training credits (40 CFUs) is assigned by the teaching staff to activities connected with the specific research of individual doctoral students, including participation in conferences, seminars, schools, and stays abroad. Specifically, the training credits are distributed as follows:

  • individual research activity, to be discussed in the report for the transition to the third year (20 CFUs);
  • thesis writing (12 CFUs);
  • participation in activities related to research chosen by the doctoral student: conferences, congresses, Erasmus-type, or other types of stays abroad (8 CFUs).

Third Year
In the third year, 10 CFUs are obtained by attending in-depth seminars organized by the University of Messina in the disciplinary areas (SSD) of the individual specializations; the teaching staff assigns the remaining training credits (50 CFUs) to activities related to the specific research of individual doctoral students, including participation in conferences, seminars, schools, and stays abroad.

Specifically, the training credits are distributed as follows:

  • individual research activity, to be discussed in a seminar before admission to the final exam (12 CFUs);
  • thesis writing (30 CFUs);
  • participation in activities related to research chosen by the doctoral student: conferences, congresses, stays abroad of the "Erasmus" type or other type (8 CFUs).

Credit distribution for optional training activities:

  • Participation in a conference, congress, or seminar (1 CFU);
  • Participation in a conference, congress, or seminar as a speaker (2 CFUs);
  • Erasmus or other research stay abroad (4 CFUs);
  • Attendance of specialization courses or certifiable training activities connected with the training and research activity of the doctoral student will be assessed by the PhD Board of the individual specialization to attribute training credits and quantify them;
  • The publication of scientific articles in journals, essays in volumes, book chapters, or monographs, for which the date of acceptance of the contribution or publication of the volume will be valid, will be assessed by the PhD Board of the individual specialization to attribute training credits and quantify them;
  • Tutoring of students in the Bachelor's and Master's Degree courses of the University of Messina will be assessed by the PhD Board of the individual major to attribute training credits and quantify them;
  • After consulting the members of the individual major, the supplementary teaching activity will be assessed by the PhD Board to attribute training credits and quantify them.

Elective training activities cannot exceed 8 CFUs at most for each year of the course. Excess training credits, therefore, will not be counted towards reaching the annual threshold.

The Board of the Doctoral Course in Economics, Management, and Statistics approves the teaching activities associated with each year of the course (Activity Plan). While there are no formal exams, individual Professors will be required to report on the work carried out by students during their course during the admission phase for the following year. Credits relating to institutional courses are outlined in the annual Study Regulations and apply to the year in which the course is attended.

The PhD course is taught in English.

Further information for the items listed above

The activities and courses that are mandatory and common to all curricula for 28 CFUs are indicated in bold. The other courses can be chosen by the student, who must reach a minimum number of 53 CFU (including 28 of the mandatory courses) during the first year of the doctorate. This choice will be supported by the members of the PhD Board, based on the student's knowledge and aptitude. This will allow the student to fill gaps and develop training aligned with their research interests. The courses can be delivered face-to-face or online.

How to choose the thesis subject

At the beginning of the first year, the student will choose his/her tutor. The tutor will discuss the thesis topics with the student, and the student will develop a research project to present to the PhD Board at the end of the academic year.

Admission to the following year

Admission to the following year will be based on the evaluations of the Professors of the doctoral student's courses and on the validity of the contents of a research project for the following two years, which will be presented in a seminar at the end of the first year of the course.

CFU: 20

Further information for the items listed above
Seminars are organized with presentations by members of the PhD Board and by Professors from other Universities or representatives of the world of work.

Preparing the thesis
In the second year, students will begin to develop their thesis project, with the possibility of visiting periods abroad and attending winter and summer schools to deepen their training on more specific subjects, concerning their research interests. Participation in national and international conferences to present their scientific contributions will be encouraged.

Methods of verification for admission to the following year
At the end of the second year, each student will present in a seminar their research work carried out during the academic year. The evaluation of the seminar by the PhD Board and the evaluation by the tutor of the activity carried out will be the criteria for evaluating the transition to the third year.

Seminars are organized with presentations by members of the PhD Board and by Professors from other Universities or representatives of the world of work.

Admission to the final exam
At the end of the third year, each student will present in a seminar their research work carried out during the three years of the doctoral program. The evaluation of the seminar by the PhD Board and the evaluation of the thesis work, in addition to the tutor's judgment on the activity, carried out, will be the criteria for evaluating admission to the final exam. To this end, the Board will be supported by the evaluation of two external referees and will decide whether to immediately admit the student to the final exam or whether to assign an additional period to complete the thesis up to a maximum of six months.

Final Exam procedure
The final exam consists of a public discussion on the Doctoral thesis, previously examined and evaluated by the examination committee. At the end of the public discussion, the Committee approves or rejects the thesis, with a reasoned collegial written judgment. The Committee attributes an overall judgment on the thesis and on the doctoral student's path, choosing between the following evaluations: 'sufficient', 'good', and 'excellent'.
The Committee has the right to award honors in the presence of results of particular scientific importance. If the thesis is rejected, it will no longer be possible to discuss it again later.
